First messages and first dates after 50

A first message only needs to open a conversation. A first meeting only needs to give you a chance to talk. Keeping those goals small can make both steps easier to approach.

From the Lisa50 team. Meet founder David Minns and learn about our approach.

Begin with something you can actually see on the profile

Look at the person’s interests and pick one you would enjoy discussing. An opening such as “You mentioned music. What have you been listening to recently?” gives someone a clear way to respond. Add your own answer if it helps make the exchange feel like a conversation rather than an interview.

Keep the first message easy to read. A long account of your life can ask too much of somebody who does not know you yet. A greeting, a little context and one question are enough to start. There is no special phrase that guarantees a reply.

Our profile interests guide has more examples. The best choice is one you would feel comfortable saying in person.

Choose the right way to show interest on Lisa50

A LIKE

A free LIKE is a simple signal of interest when you do not want to write an opening. Members can exchange LIKEs without an upgrade.

A flirt

A free flirt reaches multiple people. Write an introduction that makes sense to a group, rather than implying a personal observation about one recipient.

A private message

Full one to one private messaging requires an upgrade. It allows a conversation directed to an individual. Check the current options in the service.

For example, a group flirt could say, “Hello, I am getting to know the site. What is your idea of a relaxed weekend?” A private message can refer to an interest on that particular person’s profile. The distinction helps keep your introduction honest.

Let the conversation become mutual

Answer what the other person has said before moving to your next question. Share enough of your own experience to give them a turn to be curious. If you find yourself sending several messages without a response, step back instead of increasing the pressure.

A reply is an invitation to keep talking, not an agreement to meet or move to another app. You can keep using the service while deciding what you want to share. Be cautious about requests for money or pressure to disclose personal information, and read the Lisa50 safety advice.

Start with a free LIKE

Make a clear, low pressure invitation

When you both seem interested in continuing, suggest something specific and easy to decline. For example: “I have enjoyed talking. Would you like to meet for a coffee somewhere central next week?” This gives the other person a real proposal without assuming they are ready.

Agree the place and time together. Do not treat hesitation as something to overcome. If they prefer to keep talking, decide whether that works for you. Equally, you can decline an invitation without giving an elaborate explanation.

Plan a first meeting that fits both people

Choose a public place where you can hear one another and each arrange your own journey. A short coffee can be easier to plan than an entire afternoon. Consider accessibility, transport and opening times before agreeing, rather than leaving the practical details until the day.

  • Confirm a clear meeting point and a realistic time.
  • Choose a setting and cost you are both comfortable with.
  • Let someone you trust know your plans.
  • Keep control of your transport and your decision about when to leave.

Distance on a profile is a starting point, not a journey planner. Approximate locations, traffic and transport routes can change what is practical. Discuss a convenient public meeting area without exchanging home addresses.

Leave room for an ordinary conversation

You do not need to decide the future of a relationship over a first coffee. Talk about the interests that brought you together, ask about something they have mentioned and notice whether you feel comfortable being yourself.

Afterwards, a clear message is kinder than a promise you do not intend to keep. If you would like another meeting, say so. If you did not feel a connection, a brief, respectful response is enough. Neither person needs to argue their case for a second date.

Questions about messages and meetings

How soon should we meet?

There is no required number of messages. Make plans when both people feel ready, and use the safety guidance. Do not let somebody else’s urgency decide for you.

What if I feel nervous?

Choose a familiar kind of public setting and keep the first plan simple. You can say that you are getting used to dating again without apologising for it.

Does an upgrade guarantee replies?

No. It provides full private messaging. Other members choose whether to respond, and an upgrade cannot guarantee mutual interest.
